Star Staples Baseball player Ben Casparius ’17 broke the record for most hits in a Staples High School career on Wednesday, May 17, against St. Joseph High School. Casparius got his 113 hit putting him over previous record holder Jack Hennessey who set it in 2010.
Staples went on to beat St. Joseph 21-4 on Casparius’ 3-4 batting including a triple and an RBI single.
“I knew I was close to breaking it because coach told me a few games ago,” Casparius said, “but I didn’t want to stress over it or try to change my approach.”
Casparius passed Hennessey’s record of 110 career hits and continues to add on before the season comes to an end.
Teammates of Casparius were in awe as Casparius hit the historic hit and came back into the dugout.
“He got the hit and then I saw him and coach bro-hug it out so I knew he broke the record,” Michael Fanning ’17. “Then he came in and sat down on the bench and he said ‘Wow. I broke the record’ and everybody said, ‘Yeah you did, you savage’.”
Not only is he respected by his teammates, but Casparius has received high praise from many people, especially his coaches.
Head coach Jack McFarland told the ctpost, “On the mound, he’s our horse. He’s our go-to guy when we need a win.”
Casparius’ pitching skill was really shown when he pitched his no-hitter and 13 strikeouts game against Stamford on the road earlier this season.
“Ben has always made a major impact to our success. This year, he’s lights out on the mound and hitting bombs with a very high average,” Fanning said.
Casparius has committed to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to play baseball next year.
