Justin Paul ’03 along with songwriting partners Benj Pasek and Josh Hurwitz won a Golden Globe Monday night. Their song, “City of Stars”, won the award for Best Original Song in the movie, “La La Land.” Paul and Pasek wrote the lyrics, while Hurwitz composed the music. The song is sung by stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, who sing it to help illustrate the emotional narrative of the film.
Staples students were very pleased to see that Paul had won a Golden Globe. “It’s always great to see a former Staples student succeed, especially at the level that Justin Paul has had success at,” Ollie Lindenbaum ’19 said.
“La La Land” won seven Golden Globes in total, breaking the record of most Golden Globes won by one movie, which was previously five. “La La Land” got positive reviews from the critics, earning a 93% rating from Rotten Tomatoes and a 8.9/10 from IMDb. The movie also made $68.2 billion at the box office.
Most recently, Paul and Pasek created the musical “Dear Evan Hansen,” which debuted in 2015.
