Staples Superfans is a student-run organization dedicated to school spirit. Each year, Superfans work to spread the word about the time and place of sporting events, getting large crowds to show up, and organizing cheers. The 2011-2012 Staples Superfans are run by co-presidents, Andrew Felman ’14 and Stephen Colodny ’13 and the club has roughly 300 participants.
Utilizing Facebook, Felman and Colodny created the group “Staples Superfans 11-12” in the beginning of the school year. Additionally, Facebook events are made for many sporting events, looking for big crowds to go out and support Staples. Event invitations are sent to every member of the Superfans group and every Facebook friend of the creator of the event. Superfans are encouraged to spread the word throughout all grades, in order to reach the largest number of students.
A main goal of the Superfans is to host “white outs” at important and competitive games. To make this easier and more uniform, the co-presidents created Staples Superfans shirts for 20 dollars each.
“When designing the t-shirt, we had the idea that it would look cool with everyone wearing the same white shirts for a white out,” Felman said.
In the past, there has been an opportunity to make a larger profit off t-shirt sales, but Superfans is now officially a Staples club and all accounting must be done through the school. All profits from the t-shirts will be donated to the pink out football game, supporting breat cancer research, on Oct. 15 at 2:00 p.m. at Staples.
Superfans should aim for consistent attendance at all sporting events, along with actively cheering on the teams.
“I’d like to see everyone at the games cheering for and supporting our teams, but also being appropriate and following FCIAC guidelines,” said Colodny.
Any students who are not in the Superfans group on Facebook and would like to be can join by searching “Staples Superfans 11-12” and requesting to join. All grades are welcome to participate in the club and support Staples at all events.
