Pro: We Can’t and Won’t Stop Miley
Entering in a 90‘s inspired, vintage Dolce & Gabbana bedazzled crop top. Switching into a silver teddy bear leotard to perform “We Can’t Stop.” Finally, ending in a flesh colored two piece, bright red lipstick, black studded platform shoes, and a foam finger in her right hand. Miley Cyrus twerked her way into VMA history.
Cyrus’ performance got over 300,000 tweets per minute. The day after the VMA’s she tweeted “Smilers! My VMA performance had 306,000 tweets per minute. That’s more than the blackout or Superbowl! #fact.”
The world is having trouble facing that Miley Cyrus is no longer Disney’s teenage Hannah Montana with a good girl persona. She’s Miley Cyrus, a 20-year-old who has no shame in expressing who she is.
A few days after the VMA’s, Staples student Sofia Weinberg ’15 wrote a status in response to Cyrus’ performance.
“Miley Cyrus is not a robot. She has feelings. But from what I’ve heard in her interviews, she’s proud of who she is and no one is going to bring her down,” said Weinberg. “That’s a role model in itself, in my opinion. Take away the makeup, clothes, dancing, etc. and listen to the words THEY say as opposed to the ones you hear from others. You might be surprised.”
Cyrus’ ‘sexual’ performance is nothing new to VMA’s.
Madonna humped the stage in a wedding dress at the 1984 VMA’s. Britney Spears did a strip tease at the 2000 VMA performance.
This cycle is not uncommon.
Cyrus could have been worse. Other child stars like Jodie Sweetin, also know as Stephanie from the 80’s sitcom Full House, are recovering drug addicts. And let’s not forget about Amanda Bynes’ psychotic episodes this year.
Yet, when Miley Cyrus continues the VMA performance cycle, trying to make history, she is criticized from the media weeks after her performance. With a new controversial topic each week: “Her performance was racist” or “degrading to women.”
“When I was watching the VMA’s I was kind of shocked. It wasn’t like her to do something that, I don’t know, odd?” said Elizabeth Jordan ‘15. “But she’s been one of my favorite artists since I can remember, and one little dumb move isn’t going to make me think anything less of her. She’s just being Miley.”
Conclusion: Miley Cyrus is going to do whatever she wants. She can’t stop and she won’t stop.
Con: An Open Letter To The Artist Formally Known As Hannah Montana
The year was 2009. You starred in Hannah Montana: The Movie, “and the Jay-Z song was on,” because there was a “party in the U.S.A.”
Flash forward four years to 2013 and you’re now starring with Robin Thicke in videos of your infamous performance at the MTV Video Music Awards and according to Jay-Z, “somewhere in America, Miley Cyrus is still twerkin’.”
What happened to you Miley?
It seems like yesterday you were living your double life on Disney Channel with Lilly, Oliver, Jackson, and of course, Billy Ray.
I understand you wanted to be seen as an adult after the show that millions of kids loved came to an end. Well, congratulations you “came in like a wrecking ball” and wrecked your Disney image.
Now can you please go back?
Stop teaming up with Wiz Khalifa and Juicy J and go back to singing with Billy Ray.
Stop singing about cocaine and go back to singing about “the best of both worlds.”
Frankly, you need to stop being the annoying, attention seeker that you’ve become.
Google chrome users can literally block your name and blur all pictures of you by downloading an extension called No Cyrus. Instead of Miley Cyrus, your name becomes ##### #####.
No Cyrus also blocks any Kardashian references.
Miley – you’re just as bad as Kim Kardashian.
Take a moment to realize that.
Put your tongue back in your mouth, put on some clothes and we can forget these past years ever happened.
We’ll forgive you Miley, because as you taught us back in 2007, “nobody’s perfect.”
