I’m Catholic. Always have been.
I go to church, and I celebrate the holidays. However, I’m not like Amanda Bynes’s character in Easy A, who practically shoved religion down people’s throats..
I do know some things though, but I guess I wasn’t too up to date with a lot of Catholic news, considering I found out that the Pope resigned through Twitter.
Because I’m Catholic, you might think this was a big deal to me, but no. Pope Benedict XVI (I didn’t even know there were that many) put down the funny hat and resigned on February 28, 2013.
He resigned because he thought he was too old. Makes sense to me. Usually 85-year-old men are retired and residing in Florida.
And then we get a new pope. And he’s 9 years younger than the last one. But that’s not too old, right? If he was from the United States he would have lived through the Great Depression, but that’s not too old.
The new pope is named Pope Francis. But his real name is Jorge Bergoglio. I like the name Pope Jorge Bergoglio better than Pope Francis. It’s an awesome name that rolls off the tongue, whether you pronounce it correctly or not.
This new pope hails from Argentina, is the first pope from the Americas, is the first pope from the Southern Hemisphere, and is the first pope to use the name Francis. This pope has had a lot of firsts, and so he’s expected to make a difference in the world.
Other popes have been humanitarians and really helped the Catholics around the world. Who knows what this pope will do?
Maybe he’ll pass a law that it’s mandatory to have a week off school during every single Christian holiday. The pope can do that, right?
