First came Hurricane Sandy, then the February 8 blizzard, and to close off the winter, another snow day, making seven total school days missed this year. With these lost days comes a need for calendar adjustments that have been long awaited.
On Mon. April 1, the Westport School District announced that the official last day of school for the district will be Mon. June 24, 2013, and the last midterm is on Wed. June 22. It was also announced that the class of 2013 will graduate on Fri. June 21, 2013.
According to Westport Superintendent Elliot Landon, he waited until April 1 because he wanted to make sure that snow emergencies were no longer possible.
While graduation was pushed back from its original date, seniors are happy that it wasn’t made even later. Katie Degener ’13 is thankful that graduation day is before the weekend so that she can officially begin summer sooner. “Making graduation the following Monday or Tuesday would seem ridiculous to me,” Degener said. “With summer jobs and trips that seniors have planned, graduating Friday will make sure that they don’t conflict.”
