Superintendent Elliot Landon says that Westport Public Schools’ current security precautions will be “reviewed” in light of yesterday’s horrific attack on Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., which took place just 22 miles from Westport.
“The safety and well-being of our children always is our first priority and, if we can learn anything from the Newtown incident that will help us to reinforce our efforts to protect our children, we will apply those lessons to security in the Westport Public Schools,” said Landon.
The current plan mandates regular precautionary lockdown-drills in order to be prepared in the event of an emergency and contains an emergency evacuation plan.
According to Landon, procedures may be tightened as more information is released regarding the security of Newtown.
Principal Dodig, who will address the student body with more information on Mon., Dec. 17, says he is confident that the school is already doing its best to protect its students and that he does not foresee any major changes.
“In truth, there is only so much we can do and not turn our school (or any school) into a prison,” Dodig said.
