All it takes is a rake and a hoe, so the saying goes. Builders Beyond Borders (B3) celebrated its 20th anniversary on Sunday, Oct. 13 in conjunction with Wakeman Town Farm (WTF).
Over the course of eight hours, 200 volunteers achieved two years worth of work, according to WTF Board Member Dan Kahn.
“It’s a cooperation of some good local organizations coming together—that’s always a good thing,” said Carrie Aitkenhead, co-steward of the farm.
Tasks ranged from clearing an area for goats, doubling the size of the garden beds, building storage shelves in the barn, and wiring outside electricity.
B3 Executive Director Amy Schroeder-Riggio was pleased with the turnout, as it was the organization’s first big community event.
“I’m happy. Look at all these people working,” Schroeder-Riggio said with a smile.
B3 began in 1993 with 29 students and has expanded, according to its website, to working locally and globally to contribute 20,000 hours of service each year through student and adult efforts. The group will travel to Guyana over the 2012-2013 school year.
