Former Libyan leader, Muammar Gaddafi died due to gunshot wounds on Thursday, when rebels gained control of his hometown, Surt, government officials said.
Gaddafi ruled Libya for 42 years before he was overthrown by rebel forces earlier this year.
Al Jazeera television showed images of Gaddafi’s corpse as rebel fighters in Surt fired weapons into the air.
The New York Times reports that Libyans are rejoicing in the news of Gaddafi’s death, as residents are pouring into Tripoli streets to celebrate.
Staples students react in the library as they discover the news.
“I saw some Facebook status and went to check CNN.com,” said Barrett Kowalsky ’12. “I couldn’t believe he was actually dead.”
