Although the impending forecast for rain appeared to be a threat early in the weekend, the clouds cleared for a beautiful October morning for the Wakeman Town Farm (WTF) “Pancake Breakfast & Pop Up Farmers’ Market” event on Sunday, Oct. 2.
A $5 entrance fee allowed families and friends to enjoy pancakes, bacon, and farm fun events from 9 a.m.-noon. Profits for the event will go towards WTF’s $20,000 goal, which will support the cost of the farm for one year and allow former farm stewards Mike and Carrie Aitkenhead to return to Wakeman.
“The event is really for the farm, we just happen to be apart of it, but the community support is amazing,” AP Environmental Science teacher Mike Aitkenhead said.
Before 11 a.m. the event had already attracted more attendees than Aitkenhead could have ever expected.
“We would have been very happy if 100 people came but it looks like we have already well surpassed that number,” he said. “It’s been a great morning.”
Christie’s Country Store supplied the pancakes, nitrate-free bacon and fresh maple syrup. Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, and other vendors donated food to the event as well.
Staples Club Green members and AP Environmental students came to attend and volunteer at the event as well.
“It’s been a really great crowd. It seems like we will definitely reach the $20,000 goal,” Brittany Lobdell ’12 said.
