Staples High School had its first mascot created 40 years ago, by Tom Wall, with the anvil and the hard hat. After that, the senior class gift was a $5,000 outfit, with a huge “Wrecker” head. That outfit was used on the sidelines of football games and other Staples sporting events for years, until it was left out in the rain, as said by soccer coach and Westport historian Dan Woog.
Now, a new logo has been designed for the Wreckers by the promotions company Spartan Sports in California.
“They called looking to do some promotional products for us,” Athletic Department Secretary Sue Skutnick said. “So they asked for the mascot.”
The company created the new design, and “Mr. Lisevick really liked it,” Skutnick said. She noted that the idea to redesign the mascot wasn’t only from the company. “I did go to the graphic design club [twice]…I guess the students weren’t interested,” Skutnick said, who didn’t love the old mascot, citing an imperfection with one of his arms.
However, it is important to note that “the original mascot isn’t replaced,” as Skutnick said. If a group wants to use the old one they still may do so. A team can also use its own logo, like the girls basketball team, for instance, with its Lady Wrecker logo.
The new Staples mascot is black, blue, and white, featuring an extremely muscular man with a hard hat. He wears overalls and holds an anvil in one hand, and another tool in his other. Both Skutnick and Lisevick are very pleased with the new design.
“It’s far more intimidating to our competition than our old mascot,” Skutnick said.
For all interested students, t-shirts, and stadium seat cushions with the new mascot design are for sale in the Athletic Department for $10.
