On Oct.16 the Best Buddies Club participated the Best Buddies Connecticut Friendship Walk, held at North Haven Middle School.
Although the Staples group may be a small part within the international non-profit organization of Best Buddies, they made a big impact by raising over $2,400 for the walk. Public Relations Officer Courtney Dionne ‘11 was responsible raising $1,800 of the total amount.
Thanks to Dionne as well as all other club members who contributed, Staples placed second in all of Connecticut for the amount of money they raised. The group will receive a trophy for their efforts, and will also be featured in next year’s event brochure.
“The amount of money we raised is amazing. I’m so proud of everyone,” Club Advisor, Patty McQuone said.
The money raised from the event will go directly to the organization, which helps provide jobs and friendships for people with intellectual disabilities.
Although contributions, and assistance in fundraising came from all members of the club, the six who participated in the walk included McQuone and Dionne, along with Event Committee Leader Becca Bobrow ‘11, President Avery Vogt ‘11, Devon Sussmane ‘11 and Joe Aftab ‘13.
Executive Director Sami Schwaeber ‘12 stresses the club’s importance at Staples, and although she was unable to attend the event, she was thrilled with the club’s contributions.
“There are a lot of important organizations at Staples but I think ours is special because we are making friendships with people who don’t have them. We really get to reach out to them. Even though not everyone could come to the event, I’m really proud of everyone for coming together and being able to come in second,” she said.
