As soon as the master schedule comes out, students can be seen building their schedules manually, trying their best to get certain teachers, avoid others, and even be in classes with friends. However, there is a way to do all of this by only a click of a button.
On the Staples High School homepage, there is a link to a schedule generator. Eric Lubin ’11 designed the generator, which electronically configures numerous schedules for each student based on the classes he or she is taking.
To use this generator, you type in each class you are taking in the search box and proceed to click “move checked classes to personal schedule” to create your personal schedule. Once you have put all the classes you are taking on your personal schedule, you press “continue” and check any period and teacher that you would want to take. You then click “get possible schedules,” and all possible configurations of classes and teachers you would be able to take come up.
“You can also uncheck all but one teacher, essentially telling the program that you want all possible schedules given that you are taking this specific teacher during this specific period. All of these number-crunching permutations are done almost instantaneously without any sweat on the part of the user and thus highlight the utility and functionality of the arena schedule generator,” said Lubin.
The generator is a very useful tool that sometimes goes unnoticed, as it is very hard to get one perfect schedule at Arena.
“After the master schedule came out last year, and I found myself manually creating iterations of possible schedules in excel, I knew there was a better way and resolved to create an automated arena schedule generator. After countless hours of coding, debugging, and just pure frustration, I finally got it to be fully functional and released it for mainstream use before arena of last year,” said Lubin.
The number of schedules available differs for each student and is especially smaller for juniors and seniors who are taking higher-level classes.
