Girls’ swim takes fifth-place in State Opens
Staples girls’ swim and dive claimed fifth-place at State Opens, on Saturday, Nov. 17, at Yale University. After a season of hard work, the girls were looking forward to their final meet.
“We have been working extremely hard in the pool this season and it was great to watch all that hard work pay off,” captain, Michelle Kennedy ’19 said.
Although there were only some swimmers from the team that competed in State Opens, they were not the only ones who contributed to the win. “[The meet] was definitely a team effort and a team victory,” captain Marisa Healy ’19 said. “This team is so special because everyone is super supportive of each other. So many girls who weren’t swimming at State Opens still came to cheer.”
Staples swimmers competed in 13 events and placed first in the 200 meter free relay. This first place win was particularly exciting for the girls as they had been focused on this event throughout the season.
“Winning the 200 [meter] free relay at state opens was a goal we had from pretty early on in the season which made it even more exciting when it happened,” Healy remarked.
Staples seniors were especially happy with the result of their last ever high school meet. “The relay did fantastic,” Kennedy said, “and it was honestly a great way to end my high school career,”
