Staples girls’ varsity soccer now has a three game winning streak with a 2-0 victory over Wilton on October 21. Morgan McWhirter ’17 recorded the first goal on a corner kick from Reese Sutter ’20, while Kathryn Ialeggio ’20 scored the second off a rebound from Tia Zajec’s shot ’17.
Staples is now 11-2-2 and currently holds third place in FCIACs. Wilton was unable to find the back of the net on Friday. The Warriors are now in fifth place in the FCIAC standings. The girls’ soccer team currently has a 10-4-1 record and goes on to play New Canaan on October 25.
Although it rained early Friday, that did not faze Staples. McWhirter scored nearly ten minutes into the game while Ialeggio scored at 54:30. Ialeggio scored off a put back shot from Tia Zajec. The Warriors’ goalie Taylor Floyd recorded 14 saves while Staples Anna Sivinski ’18 saved three shots on goal. Near the end of the game Annie Amacker ’18 went down with an apparent knee injury.
“It’s great we got the win but it’s kind of scary because we’re going into the postseason and Annie is a very important part of the team,” Charlotte Rossi ’17 said to “The Hour.”
Staples lost 1-0 at Wilton last year, with Wilton scoring in the final minutes of the game to secure the win. The win placed the Warriors into a tie in FCIACs with Staples (7-5-1).
Staples will play their final regular season game at Warde on October 26. Warde is in seventh place in FCIACs with a 7-5-3 record. Staples will then get ready for a run for an FCIAC title.
