The mohawks, cornrows and other quirky hairstyles of student athletes are back with the fall sports season heavily underway. These different hairstyles unify the teams on and off the field.
This season, members of the undefeated Staples football team (3-0) continue their mohawk hair tradition with a bit of flare. Rather than get mohawks for the homecoming game, the boys decided to speed up the process and cut their hair at the start of the season for an element of extra-hype.
Captain Ryan Fitton ’17 and University of Connecticut football commit thinks the mohawks contribute to a very close knit team. “The purpose of the mohawks is that they’re tradition and good for team bonding,” Fitton said. Perhaps the premature mohawks have boosted the Wreckers in their great start this fall.
Along with the football team, Staples girls soccer plans to continue their unconventional hairstyling of corn rows. Again, the primary motivation of this continued hairstyle is to bond the whole team and relish in the last couple weeks of their season.
Captain Tia Zajec ’17 and Bucknell University commit looks forward to partaking. “For the past 2 years we have done it…It’s kinda just a fun team bonding event that everyone looks forward to and it gets us pumped up for FCIACs and states,” Zajec said. She also hopes that the underclassmen inherit the contemporary corn row trend after she graduates. “I think it will become a tradition now like how football does Mohawks,” Zajec said. As the post season approaches the abundance of this exotic hair trend will be witnessed on Loeffler field.
Surprisingly, the Staples boys soccer team has been off to a rough start with an inability to finish games. They are looking to funky new hairstyles as an incentive and inspiration.
Captain Spencer Daniels ’17 is looking to switch it up. “In previous years we have done only Mohawks. This year, we want everyone to do something creative to their hair (bleach, dye, Mohawk, frosted tips),” Daniels said. Hopefully this creative new look will create a better outcome for the rest of the season.
As the FCIAC and State contests begin, Staples students, superfans and teachers should be looking to support the teams and their fresh new styles.
