The girls’ basketball team was in high spirits after defeating Brian McMahon on Jan. 7th with a final score of 46-30. After a rocky beginning to the season, the girls are hoping to pull together and make a strong comeback.
Senior captain, Meredith Bemus ’14, is confident that their hard work is going to pay off. “The team is still figuring out our identity. We’ve been working really hard,” Bemus said. “After the win,we are hoping to build more momentum.”
This past season was the first time in 28 years that the team did not qualify for states. With the loss of some key players this year, Abby Lustig ’15 said the girls are working on
communication and working as a group on the court.
The team is also trying to improve and polish their skills.
“We are also focusing a lot on shot form, being aggressive, and making smart passes, and we’ve made a lot of good progress there.” Lustig said. “Our hard work is definitely paying off.”
Lustig, one of the team’s key players, scored some points that contributed to the win. As a leading scorer, Lustig scored a total of 20 points, 14 in the second half alone.
Accompanying Lustig, Madeline Schemel ’15 had her first ‘double double’ of the season, 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Maggie Fair ’15 demonstrated complete control as the point guard.
Coach Ed Huydic mentioned that he’s proud of the girls’ determination to bounce back and give it their all. “The team executed its defensive sets in good fashion and had a strong offensive showing following a somewhat sluggish start,” Huydic said.
As for the goals for the rest of the season, Huydic is confident the team will pull through and work collaboratively to achieve greater compatibility on the court.
“The Wreckers are progressing toward developing a real resilient varsity mentality and attitude and will continue to work on the necessary skill sets to improve both individually as well as a unit.”
