Staples Varsity Field Hockey defeated Stamford on Tuesday under the lights on the Staples football field. The final score was 4-3. Two of Staples’ goals were scored by Jenna McNicholas ‘15, and the other two were scored by Issy Pieper ‘14 and Jordan Ragland ‘16.
The team’s record is 3-0-3 so far this year. Players are feeling good about the improvement that the team has already shown. “We have really improved on scoring and passing accurately. I think this really showed in the game,” said Valerie Fitton ‘14.
However, the girls know that their technique isn’t perfect and that they still have some work to do. “I feel like we have to work back to the basics of the sport, such as easy passing and drills,” said Ragland.
Maggie Fair ‘15 acknowledged that the team also needs to work on keeping their energy up throughout the entire game. She said that while they came out strong at first, they started to fall apart towards the end of the game.
Tuesday’s game was especially difficult as the team was missing their starting varsity goalie. “We were prepared for a tough fight…Stamford is a very aggressive team,” said captain Elizabeth Coogan ‘14, “we proved that our practice has most definitely paid off because we had great ball control and passing that was right on target!”
Despite their challenges, the players seem to be very proud of their team. “I’m most proud of how tough we’ve played through all of our games this season,” said Fair.
“I’m so excited to keep playing with these girls for the rest of the season. We’ve all bonded so much and we’re so close. It’s great spending time with them and improving our game together,” said Fitton.
Varsity field hockey plays next on Friday at Brien McMahon at 7:00 pm.
