The Girls Staples Lacrosse team has had their fair share of wins and losses this season. On May 11, 2013, Staples navy blue and white suffered an unfortunate loss to Glastonbury royal blue and white. The girls did not let the rainy weather hinder their energy as they took on a team they beat last year. Despite their efforts, Staples lost with the final score being 11-15.
3 minutes in to the first half Glastonbury made their first goal off of a foul shot. But just three minutes later Staples came back making the score 2-1. This was essentially the trend of the whole game, Glastonbury would make a goal and Staples would, shortly after, tie it up or vice versa. About half way through the first half (13 minutes in) the score was 3-3 and the first time out took place. By half time the score was 5-9, Glastonbury, and the angst of the Staples player was apparent.
One of the three captains, Megan O’Shea ’13 explains where the majority of these goals were coming from. “Glastonbury had one strong girl, number 2, who just took it to the cage and turned it into a fast break game,” she said. Ryan Kirshner ’13, also captain, explains that Glastonbury “has great shot placement,” which also contributed to their scoring.
In the second half Staples made it their job to play catch up. 18 minutes in they had brought the score up to 11-12 and nails were starting to be bitten in the crowd.
The last five minutes of the game were nerve-wracking for both teams. With only five minutes left, the score was 11-14, Glastonbury. Unfortunately Staples stayed at 11 goals total: 2 from Meredith Hood ‘14, 1 from Paige Murray ‘15, 1 from Jenna McNicholas ‘15, 3 from Ryan Kirshner ‘13, 2 from Sami Bautista ‘13, 1 from Kate Lesch ‘16, and 1 from Nicki Najarian ‘15, while Glastonbury won with 15 goals total.
Jenna McNicholas ’15 reflects on the game saying, “We’re all obviously disappointed with the loss but we are using the game to find what we need to work on so we can come out Wednesday on senior night and beat Danbury.” That Wednesday night game is crucial for the girls to win if they plan on going to FCIACs.
Ryan Kirshner ‘13 is pleased with how the team played. “We had a lot of heart and hustle,” she says. And it’s true– the girls did not let the gloomy weather lower their spirits.
