Recently, Staples lacrosse player Will Johnson ’14 was named the Westport News Athlete of the Week for his double-overtime game-winning goal over New Canaan. It was the Wreckers first win over the Rams, breaking a 30-plus year losing streak.
According to Johnson, “It was such a hard fought game, and winning such a big game felt amazing.”
Eric Zurmuehle ’13, a varsity midfielder, described the atmosphere after the game. “After we won, it was really exciting and everyone charged the field.”
Johnson ’14 is no one-trick pony. Lance Lonergan ’13, one of the lacrosse captains, said that a large part of Johnson’s success comes from his ambidextrous shooting.
“He’ll take shots all day,” Lonergan ’13 said. “It makes him a reliable part of our system and with his confidence in his scoring ability, it’s a tough-guard for other teams when they have to worry about him [as well as] Joey Zelkowitz and Colin Bannon.”
