On Saturday April 9, Boys Varsity Lacrosse team beat Fairfield Ludlowe 11-10 in a sudden death overtime.
“We came out strong, which we didn’t do last game,” Tri-Captain Kip Orban ’11 said.
This was evident as Staples scored the first two goals of the game shortly into the first quarter – one from Orban and the other from Nick Maki ’11. Ludlowe, however, was quick to return with a goal. Staples lead 3-2 by the end of the first quarter.
The rest of the game was just as close, each team struggled to maintain the lead. The half ended in Staples’ favor, though Ludlowe redeemed itself in the third quarter, scoring five goals in quick. These five goals were countered by five from Staples in the fourth quarter. The quarter ended with a tie score of 10-10.
A four-minute sudden death succession overtime followed. As the ball moved from Ludlowe’s possession to Staples’ and back again, it looked as if the overtime would also end in a draw. However, with four seconds remaining, Jake Frimet ’12 scored the winning goal, ending the game 11-10.
Orban and Tri-Captain Charlie Ross ’11 agreed that this goal was the best play of the game: “He spun in and buried it,” Orban said. “And he even had time for the fake,” Ross added.
The captains hope to work on transitioning from offense to defense in the next game, which is at Ridgefield High School, April 12 at 6 p.m.
