On Feb. 4, the Staples boys’ swimming and diving team was defeated at home by Stamford’s Westhill High, 102-76. The Wreckers’ record dropped to 2-3, while Westhill moved to 7-1.
However, the Wreckers saw a number of victories during the meet. Nathaniel Boley ’13 placed first in both the 50 freestyle and the 100 backstroke, coming in at 25:59 and 1:03:37, respectively. Chris Mombello ’14 also came in first in the 100 breaststroke, with a time of 1:16:61.
For many, like swimmer Robert DeLuca ’13, this loss was unsurprising.
“Honestly, [the meet] kind of turned out how we expected it to. Our team is in about the middle of the FCIAC, and they’re much better than us,” DeLuca said.
Coach Jeffrey Schare also realizes the level of competition Westhill put up for the Wreckers: “From our end, I think we did pretty good. In my mind, that’s the best team we’ve seen thus far,” Schare said.
Despite the loss, swimmer Matt Wetmore ’13 says that the effort is apparent on the team, and looks forward to the future.
“We are putting out our strongest lineup, and we have to continue to go out there and push ourselves as hard as we can,” Wetmore said.
The recent weather has affected the boys’ swimming and diving team, which is now facing six meets in the next two weeks. The next meet is away in Wilton on Feb. 8.
“Hopefully, we can put together a winning season,” captain Scott Feder ’11 said.
