The Staples Co-op boys hockey team improved their record to 2-0 on Dec. 18 when they faced off against the Joel Barlow Falcons at the Shelton Rinks.
Despite suffering the loss of key players in captain Kyle Wehmhoff ’12 and Shelton captain Dan Guerrera ’11 the Wreckers pulled away with a 8-2 win.
Wemhoff was not eligible to play on Saturday after being ejected from the Wrecker’s previous game due to a questionable call which was ruled head to head contact. Guerrera sustained a concussion in the team’s pre-season jamboree and has not yet been able to participate in a regular season game.
Steven Shulman ’13 started off the scoring for the Wreckers in the first period on a power play. Wyatt Fern ’13 (one goal) and captain Tali Laifer ’11 (two goals) also contributed in the first period.
Captain Aaron Liu ’12 and Tom Meyers ’14 increased the lead to 6-0 in the second period with one goal each.
In the last period of the game Sean Stewart ’14, and Eric Zurmuehle ’14 were both able to find the back of the net and added two more tallies to the score.
Goalie and alternate captain Luke Andriuk ’11 held the Falcons scoreless for the first 35 minutes of the game. Zac Polin ’14 then replaced Andriuk in goal for the remaining 10 minutes which marked his first varsity appearance. Despite making numerous close saves, Polin allowed two Falcon goals in the last two minutes of the game.
