Nicknamed “bull,” freshman Brian Terzian is the first freshman to be moved up to the varsity baseball since Jack Hennessy ’10, four years ago.
He started off on the freshman team, but was moved up shortly after.
“He outperformed that level, and we moved him up to JV, where he again outperformed that level, so he ended up on varsity,” said varsity Baseball coach Jack McFarland.
He has trained both locally in Westport and on various travel teams, leading him to be a key member of the team.
It is not common to take freshman onto varsity, because as McFarland says, “it takes a special kid with the right maturity level to be on a team with mostly upperclassman.” He noted that Brian definitely has that needed maturity.
However, Terzian has been widely accepted and the team loves working with their new teammate.
“My teammates have been great and have made my situation very easy,” said Terzian.
The team is having a very successful season, with a current record of 18-1, and Terzian, although a freshman, has contributed to many of the wins.
“He has had some important hits including a 2-run double against St. Joes which helped us win, and a big hit against Norwalk,” said McFarland.
Terzian is proud of this record and notes that his favorite part of being on varsity is “watching the team win.” He has enjoyed the experience as a whole, and is excited to continue and grow as a player.
“He’s a good kid, we’ve had no problems,” said Coach McFarland, who is excited to coach him for the next few years.
