Despite a strong team effort, the Staples girls’ ice hockey team was defeated in its first game, 5-1 by Trumbull High School.
“This was a good start, we learned a lot. This is a good baseline to start with and now we know what we need to improve on for the rest of the season,” said Kate Shanahan ’11.
By the end of the first period Staples was already down 2-0. However, they started off the second period with a bang, scoring in the first thirty seconds. The goal was scored by Shanahan off a rebound originally shot by Brittany Hamlin ’11. Hamlin had brought the puck all the way down the ice from Staples defense.
Trumbull regained momentum with three goals in three consecutive minutes, though, strengthening their lead.
For the rest of the game, Staples was able to hold Trumbull off and they did not score again.
Although Staples lost game, the team was happy with its performance.
“The girls did a great job. It was a building process, they definitely ended the game a lot better than they started it,” said Head Coach David Rollison.
The team also noted that because it is only its second year as a varsity team they were at a disadvantage. “A lot of us have only been playing two to three years, and we are playing against teams that have been playing together for six or seven years, so we were able to hold our own considering,” said Jenna Chusid ’11.
Overall, the team feels that regardless of the score, it was a good game and is confident that they will continue to improve throughout the season. The girls were satisfied with how they played.
“You can’t ask for more than girls showing up and giving it their all. That’s what we had, that’s what our girls did,” said Shanahan.
Jenn Hoets ’11 agreed, saying, “Our girls went out there and played with all their hearts.”
