Swimmer Helene Neuhaus ‘10 broke the 100 meter backstroke record with a time of 1:05.93 last Monday, October 5.
Neuhaus won the event, leading the Wreckers to victory over Fairfield Ludlowe during a dual meet at the Staples High pool.
She shattered the original record by nearly half a second, which in swimming measurements is a lifetime. Neuhaus contributes her success to longtime Wrecker swim coach Mike Laux.
“Coach Laux is the definition of a hero in my eyes. He challenges me everyday to reach my full potential and has helped me through some difficult obstacles,” said Neuhaus.
The previous record, 1:06.26, was set back in 2001. Neuhaus broke that record in front of many supportive teammates and fans.
“The whole team was going crazy and cheering for me, and when I saw my time on the board I just couldn’t believe it. It was surreal,” said Neuhaus.
Helene’s success, though, is no accident. It has come after years of hard work and determined persistence. Her countless hours in the pool and weight room have paid large dividends so far this year. In fact, she has cut almost three seconds off her time in the backstroke from last season.
“I have worked so hard this season, and seeing these results is the most satisfying experience,” said Neuhaus.
Looking ahead, Helene does not plan on slowing down. Her goals are high, and she has every intention of reaching each of them. They include breaking records in the 50 and 100 meter freestyle races, as well as winning FCIACs and States.
