Gilbertie’s Winter Farmers’ Market reopens for the season
The Winters Farmers’ Market reopened for the winter season in November at Gilbertie’s Herb Gardens and has been drawing crowds ever since. The market runs weekly every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. through March 14.
The farmers’ market was founded in order to introduce new vendors and food trucks to Connecticut residents as well as display fresh and local food. The market is supported by The Westport Farmers’ Market, many other local companies and restaurants.
“Our mission is to increase awareness, knowledge and support for local producers focused on sustainable and healthy growing practices,” the Westport Farmers’ Market website states.
The winter edition of the farmers’ market has been ongoing since 2010. Lori Cochran-Dougall, a Westport resident, is the executive director of the Westport Farmers’ Market.
Cochran-Dougall expressed her love and excitement for the market in a Hamlet Hub article.
“We’re stepping it up for this year’s winter market,” Cochran-Dougall said. “We are celebrating our mission as a true community hub with food, activities, and education about local farmers and ingredients.”
The farmers’ market opened in November with a celebratory party, including live music, food and drinks.
“Guests will enjoy lawn games, pumpkin bowling and fairy house-making to celebrate the transition from a phenomenally successful summer market to the beginning of the best indoor winter market in the area,” the Westport Farmers’ Market website said.
The market is extremely popular with Westport citizens who are health-conscious.
“Gilbertie’s has always been one of my favorite local markets,” local Westport shopper, Elizabeth Brannen, said, “and now with the weekly markets in the winter, it makes healthy shopping for my family even easier.”
