A new tutoring company has emerged from the minds of four students at Staples High School. The company, called Nerds on Demand Tutoring, specializes in subjects including math, science, literature, foreign language, history and music.
Sunil Green ’18 and Malini Wimmer ’18 had the idea to start the company at the end of last year, but it didn’t start to take shape until this September. With help from Brandon Cua ’18 and Jonathan Alter ’17 the company was able to flourish.
“We currently offer tutoring in all subjects, except for some AP humanities classes. In the future, we will be looking to add tutors in those subjects.” Brandon Cua ’18 said.
As the clientele increases, so will the amount of tutors in various subjects. But, teaching other students isn’t the only objective of Nerds on Demand.
According to their website, the Nerds on Demand mission states, “Our goal is not only to help and challenge students academically. We want to give back to our community as a whole.”
Giving back is an important aspect of this new company. Five percent of the funds earned monthly by Nerds on Demand and their tutors will go to support a local charity or nonprofit group. Sunil Green ’18, one of the founding members, came up with this idea after attempting to find a tutoring company to work at.
“I saw that there were other Tutoring companies in the area but outside of helping students, they weren’t doing much to give back. I was contemplating joining tutors for opportunity but I wanted to give back to the local community, not the global one,” Green said.
Most of the funds generated through tutoring will be donated to local charities, which will rotate each month.
“We are donating primarily to local charities, but if national disaster or anything of caliber were to happen, we might direct our funds there.” Brandon Cua ’18 said.
In addition to helping local charities, the company prides itself on being available to a large group of students with their affordable prices.
“What really sets us apart from other tutoring companies is our mission. We want to provide high-quality, affordable tutoring such that tutors are accessible to a wide range of clients.” Jonathan Alter said.
Currently, the company provides tutoring for only 35 dollars an hour, including a free 15 minute consultation for new clients. Although the new company requires a few more tweaks, these four Staples students are well on their way to tutoring success.
Overall, Malini Wimmer reflects that Nerds on Demand is a tutoring service “whose goal is to help both high school students and the community at large though the donation of money to charity and the service of helping fellow students”
