Though student interns had been working in the fields since April 2010, the Wakeman Town Farm officially opened its doors to the community on Sept. 24 during a ribboncutting ceremony.
The ceremony included speeches by environmental science teacher Michael Aitkenhead, who currently lives with his wife and two children in the Wakeman Farmstead, Monique Bosch, who helped work on the farm with the summer interns, Jeanne Wakeman, whose parents sold the property where the farm now rests to the town of Westport, and fifth-grader Charlie Colasurdo, who cut the ribbon to symbolically open the farm to the public.
“It will serve all kids like me in the future who want to learn how to farm,”
Colasurdo said during his speech.
On Saturday, Oct. 2, the Wakeman Town Farm will host a Harvest Fest fundraiser from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m.
Tickets are available for $100 dollars each and can be purchased on the Green Village Initiative’s website, westportgvi.org.
