Unsubscribed brings eco-friendly fashion to downtown Westport
Over the years, Westport has been proactive about finding environmentally safe alternatives to everyday products, such as using paper bags and straws instead of plastic. As of April 2021, an eco-friendly clothing store, Unsubscribed, opened next to Benefit in downtown Westport. Unsubscribed is a small brand owned by American Eagle Outfitters that focuses on giving today’s customer repurposed, reused and sustainable clothing options.
Unsubscribed sells chic clothing, jewelry and shoes that would interest a variety of people ranging from daughters to mothers to grandmothers. Megan Edwards, the District Manager of Unsubscribed, explains that they see customers of all demographics in the store. Their goal is for as many people as possible to purchase items that will last them generations, while also bettering the environment.
Although there are a few other stores dedicated to finding ecologically-friendly, but fashionable clothing items to sell, Unsubscribed offers downtown Westport a new outlook on sustainable fashion.
However, when looking at the prices of their merchandise, I find a lot of the products to be extravagantly priced. The Unsubscribed Recycled Cashmere Fingerless Gloves, Beanies and Scarfs are some of the cheapest products, but they still range from $78 to $118. Who’s willing to spend this much money on gloves that don’t even cover your fingers? People who care about the environment, of course.
Although these items are being sold at an extremely high asking price, they are made from discarded yarn that is repurposed into recycled cashmere. Purchasing and investing in these repurposed, up-cycled and vintage items at Unsubscribed allows Westport to do its part in bettering the Earth.
Personally, I am more likely to buy an expensive product if it is beneficial for the environment and is guaranteed to last me a long time. In today’s day and age, sustainability is everything, so Westport is taking a step in the right direction by adding Unsubscribed to its downtown shopping center.
