Many actors and actresses traveled to Hollywood on Feb. 26 to go to the 89th Academy Awards in hopes of receiving an Oscar.

“Moonlight” won the coveted Best Picture award after the announcers mistakenly announced the winner as “La La Land”. As this has never occurred before, many in the audience, and viewers at home, were shocked by the mixup. “I found it to be very unprofessional of them to make a mistake like that,” Kevin Greer ’19 said.

Staples graduate Justin Paul won an Oscar for his music production in “La La Land”. More specifically, he won for the famous song, “City of Stars”.

“The soundtrack to ‘La La Land’ was outstanding. To me, it came as no surprise that it won an Oscar,” Marlo Von der Ahe ’20 said.

“La La Land” was a common favorite among viewers, so it came as a surprise to many that the announcement of their winning was a mistake. “I was disappointed when I saw that La La Land didn’t actually win best picture, but at least the cast and director got some other awards,” Natalie Schenck  ’19 said.

Host Jimmy Kimmel brought in an unsuspecting group of tourists who were driving through on a bus. These tourists were able to meet and greet the stars who attended the awards. This addition to the show came as a surprise to every party involved.

Walking down the red carpet, actors and actresses flaunted their designer gowns and suits. “My favorite part of the Oscars is the red carpet before so that I can see what everyone is wearing. I thought Emma Stone looked amazing,” Schenck said. Emma Stone wore a gold gown that was complimented by the Planned Parenthood pin she wore on her chest.
