As Kylie Jenner’s millions of followers watched her Snapchat story of her lip syncing along to a song nobody had ever heard, they got curious. Who was this artist Kylie Jenner was singing to? Soon, everyone would know as his album, “American Teen” soared to the top of the charts, racking over 65,000,000 plays on Spotify.
Khalid, a 19-year-old singer from Texas may have recently graduated high school, but he’s just getting started in the music industry. His calming yet sing-along type songs have relatable lyrics about being a teen in today’s world.
Although this isn’t his first album, it’s the first time he’s gained this amount of attention. The 15 songs on “American Teen” sound similar to Frank Ocean, and he truly comes off as artist who’s been in the music industry for years.
Some of my favorite songs from the album are of course “Location” but also “Winter” and “Saved”. The lyrics all have to do with 21st century love, as he sings about saving someone’s phone number, sending your location via text, etc.
“I don’t wanna fall in love off of subtweets, so Let’s get personal. I got a lot of cool spots that we can go,” is just one example of the lyrics he sings in his popular song “Location”
His gentle voice combined with the techno beat and piano background makes every song on the album a hit.
Clearly the numbers show, Khalid is an up-and-coming artist who will be in the spotlight for a very long time if he keeps producing albums like this.
