Ten best songs for the summer
The Song of the Summer is the one song that seems to follow you everywhere. It’s the world-dominating track that happens to sound better before the leaves turn.
These first two tracks are examples of past summer songs,
Fancy – Iggy Azalea and Charli XCX
Before everyone found out that Iggy was actually a fraud, her song “Fancy” was a phenomenon. This track was an obvious 2014 song of the summer with its distinct beat and easily sung lyrics. In a word, this song was a sensation.
Cheerleader – OMI
Whenever I hear this song, it’s immediately associated with summer 2015. The attention-grabbing uniqueness of this song shot it up to the top of the charts. This track has a beachy vibe with a bit of a love song, making it the perfect 2015 song of the summer.
Summer 2016 is approaching, so I have precisely picked out the best contenders for the song of the summer (in no particular order).
Cake by the Ocean – DNCE
Yes, I know that this song could be considered “old,” but most summer songs are released long before Memorial Day. This song appeals to everyone – the young and the old(er). The song is great for parties, and makes the listener want to jump out of their seats and dance.
Can’t Stop the Feeling! – Justin Timberlake
I personally believe this song is the best choice for song of the summer. A happy vibe resonates throughout the entire song, perfectly encapsulating the essence of summer. The exciting lyrics, particularly the repetition of “dance” evokes a certain feeling that is definitely associated with summer. In addition, the music video is adorable.
I Took a Pill In Ibiza – Mike Posner
This song is a great contender for song of the summer because it has a mixture of both a funky undertone and a pop beat. It starts off slow, but gradually gets faster as the chorus approaches. This transition sets the song apart from others, enhancing the listening experience. However, I don’t recommend looking for the lyrics, they tell a sad story.
One Dance – Drake
Multiple people have suggested this song to me, so I figured it would be worth the listen. Although I don’t particularly enjoy Drake, I have to admit this song is pretty good. The simple, yet interesting piano and drum beat is very effective. The track is also mellow, a satisfying difference from other pop songs.
Spirits – Strumbellas
I have included this song for all of the indie rock lovers out there. This whimsical track by the Strumbellas has proven thus far to be a fantastic song for the summer. The poetic lyrics such as “I don’t want a never-ending life, I just want to be alive while I’m here” stick in my head throughout the entire day.
This Is What You Came For – Calvin Harris and Rihanna
This song has the distinct formula for song of the summer. Calvin Harris’ background music paired with Rihanna’s amazing voice creates the perfect sound. The buildup to the chorus is fantastic and manages to make the listener excited.
Victorious – Panic! At The Disco
This particular song is very juvenile, but summer brings us back to our childish roots so it fits perfectly. There isn’t a slow portion of the song; the three minutes are filled to the brim with adrenaline-filled singing. The lyrics are very easy to sing along to, an important factor the song of the summer must contain.
Summer Nights – Grease
Finally, I end with this perennial song from Grease. This track seems to fit with every summer, bringing back memories from years past. The entire movie is everlasting, but this song in particular always seems to be stuck in my head.
