“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” Captivates and Charms Staples Students
Netflix has had extreme success with it’s original series- think “House of Cards,” “Orange is the New Black”- and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” further proves Netflix’s prodigious ability to create hit TV shows.
On March 9, Netflix released the first season of “Unbreakable,” which was co-created by comedy connoisseur Tina Fey. The comedy follows the life of Kimmy Schmidt, played by Ellie Kemper, a 29 year old trying to adjust to her new life in New York City after being trapped in an apocalyptic cult for 15 years, along with three other women deemed the‘Indiana Mole Women.’
Although the circumstances of Kimmy’s situation seem grim, the show is far from it.The show has received high praise from critics and Staples students alike. Viewers attribute its success to how smart the comedy is and how likeable the main character is, according to Zia Sansted ’17. “The subject matter is hilarious and really original,” Sansted added. “It’s something you wish you came up with yourself.”
In addition, the star studded cast and crew doesn’t hurt the allure of “Unbreakable.” Some of the guest stars on Unbreakable include Jon Hamm, Kiernan Shipka and Tina Fey. Among the main cast is Jane Krakowski, who is best known for her role as Jenna Maroney on the NBC sitcom “30 Rock,” which, along with “Unbreakable,” was co-created by Fey. Krakowski plays Jacqueline Voorhees, the superficial yet charming housewife who accidentally employs Kimmy as the nanny for her children and befriends her.
Although the cast is stacked with well known names, “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” provides an opportunity for stardom for its lesser known actors. Among these is Tituss Burgess, who plays Titus Andromedon, Kimmy’s flamboyant, aspiring Broadway star of a roommate. Not only is Titus hilarious and a delight to watch, he is also raw and inspiring.
“[Titus] doesn’t care what other people think. He reinvented himself into the person that he wants to be instead of who other people want him to be,” Claire Meehan ’16 said, an avid fan of the show.
“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” is hilarious and surprisingly genius. Whether it’s the cast or comedy that leads you to clicking ‘play,’ “Unbreakable” is sure to please viewers of all demographics and interests. One warning: the theme song will be stuck in your head for days.
