“I think that some movies, like ‘Lincoln,’ should not have been nominated because a lot of them are not aimed at our generation,” said Maggie Kniffin ’13. “There are many other movies that were overlooked that should not have been.”
Ryan Greenberg ’13 also believed that certain movies should not have been nominated.
“I would never vote for ‘Amour,’” said Greenberg. “Who wants to go see a movie where you have to read subtitles? The whole point of seeing a movie is so you don’t have to read the book.”
However, there are titles that weren’t nominated for the Oscars that students proposed.
“I thought that the ‘Dark Night Rises’ was really good,” said Emily Eldh ’15. “I would have nominated that title for best picture.”
Others, like Abby Zimmerman ’13, also wished certain movies were not overlooked during the nomination process.
“I saw ‘The Hunger Games’ twice in theaters because the movie was so good,” said Zimmerman. “I am disappointed it was not nominated; I think it deserved to be.”
While some wanted to see specific movies nominated, others hoped to see a different genre of movies.
“I hoped that more action movies, such as ‘Argo,’ would have been nominated because the suspense keeps people on their toes, and [the movies] are enjoyable for everyone,” said Kniffin.
Zimmerman agreed, “Even though I knew what was going to happen in ‘Argo,’ it was still very exciting, and I think they did a good job recreating history.”
One of the more popular movies among Staples students throughout 2012 that was nominated was “Silver Linings Playbook.”
“I would definitely nominate ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ as best picture,” said Felicia Sych ’13. “It was an excellent conglomeration of humor and drama.”
However, Katie Platt ’13 disagrees. “I thought ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ was really predictable and kind of boring. I don’t think it deserved to be nominated [for best picture],” said Platt.
“Bradley Cooper was great in ‘Silver Linings Playbook,’” said Eldh. “It was really unlike any of his other work. He played a completely different part in this movie than I think he ever has before.”
Sych agreed, “Although the story was complex and unique, he was able to create a character whom the audience easily fell in love. He was witty and sharp and was able to start out as a flat character but eventually develop into a well-rounded, dynamic character.”
Many believed that Jennifer Lawrence in “Silver Linings Playbook” was also a popular nominee for the Oscars.
“Jennifer Lawrence stepped away from her popular and well-known persona of Katniss Everdeen [in ‘The Hunger Games’] … and entered a world of realism,” said Sych. “She deserves an ‘A’ just for that.”
The Oscars will premiere on Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. on ABC.
