On Sept. 12, the annual MTV Video Music Awards were held at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, Calif. The award show celebrated the best music videos released since the end of summer of 2009 and was hosted by stand-up comedian and television personality Chelsea Handler.
Lady Gaga: The Diva of the Night (And the Year. And Years to Come.)
One of the biggest names in music is Lady Gaga. Since last October, when she released “Bad Romance,” the lead single of her sophomore studio album “The Fame Monster,” Gaga’s popularity has skyrocketed. With new hits like “Alejandro”, “Telephone,” and “Monster,” Gaga has become a household name in America and across the world.
Her music video for the song “Telephone,” was nominated for three VMAs (it won one for Best Collaboration), and her “Bad Romance” music video won seven out of its ten nominations, including the win for Video of the Year.
Each time Gaga stepped to the stage to accept an award, one couldn’t help but stare in awe. She once needed three men to help her walk in a gargantuan black dress. Gaga even spoke in a dress made out of raw meat (an homage to her cover on the September issue of Vogue Hommes Japan, in which she dons the same outfit).
As a die-hard Little Monster, one of the best moments of the evening was when Gaga announced the name of her next studio album while accepting her award for Video of the Year. The album will be called “Born This Way,” and though the recording process is complete, it will not be released until 2011. You can see a clip of Gaga singing a verse of the song of the same name at the VMAs by clicking here.
I just want to take a second to talk about Lady Gaga while I have the chance. When she first started out her career, I thought she was just some other annoying, stuck-up, pushy pop star that would come and go. But as her career has progressed, she’s actually proven herself to be an incredible artist. Her songs are amazingly addictive, and even though some people may frown upon her social etiquette, she truly wants to make a difference in the world through her music, and I certainly think she has. The fact that “Bad Romance” won seven VMAs this year emphasizes the groundbreaking force of Lady Gaga. Haters, say what you want, but I’m so excited to see what she has in store for us in the future.
The Performances: Ranged From Meh to Feh
– Eminem and Rihanna: I love the song “Love the Way You Lie,” but their performance was not anything special. Eminem is definitely on a comeback streak, but Rihanna may be going in a downward spiral. Her latest album “Rated R” was average, and I haven’t really heard anything special from her since 2008, with “Disturbia.” Oh, well. She is not that big of a loss for me.
– B.o.B and Hayley Williams: I love Hayley Williams. Paramore is one of my favorite bands. But oddly enough, I don’t really want to pretend that “airplanes in the night sky are shooting stars.” I know, I know, it’s one of the biggest songs of the year, but there’s nothing special about it to me.
– Usher: Same ol’, same ol’.
– Taylor vs. Kanye: Keep reading.
Do You Have the Bieber Fever? God, I Hope Not.
I’m not even going to get into Justin Bieber. I don’t like him. That’s it. All I wanna say about him is that, and even if you’re a fan, you have to admit, it was pretty hilarious watching him scavenge the Nokia Theater for the stage when he found out he won the award for Best New Artist.
Actually, though, I’m trying to comprehend why anyone likes J-Biebs. If you’re a fan, tell me why in the comment section below. I really am trying to figure this one out.
The Taylor-Kanye Debate
You’d have to be living under a rock not to hear about what happened at the 2009 VMAs between Kanye West and Taylor Swift. To sum it up, Swift was accepting her first VMA when West unexpectedly crashed the stage and interrupted her speech to roar, “Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time.” Rude, obnoxious and totally disheartening.
Before Swift’s performance of her song “Stealing Innocence” at the 2010 VMAs, there was a clip shown of the incident between Swift and West the year before. The camera cut to Swift, and I have to admit, she did a pretty nice job. Personally, I can’t stand country music, but she looked and sounded very mature. She totally had the opportunity to bash and embarrass West for his actions last year, but she was very adult and chose not to.
West, on the other hand? Ehhh, not so much. First of all, he apologized to Swift on his Twitter a little over a week ago, which I think is a little late for an apology.
His performance, which closed the show, essentially told everyone how the world mistreats him, and if they think he’s a jerk, then all the jerks in the world rock. Boo-hoo. If he honestly thinks that that’s acceptable after his behavior from last year, he’s gone off the deep end. EW.com went so far as to call his performance “a complete victory,” which worries me that now the critics are delusional.
I used to love Kanye, and I still think he’s musically brilliant. But I’ve lost faith in him as a role model and, pretty much, as a valued member of human society. His actions have been totally inapt, and in the long run, it’s a small price for Swift to pay, whose career is soaring.
And so ends another MTV Video Music Awards show. I thought most of the winners of were chosen accurately (except Justin Bieber, but that’s just me).
Although none of the performances this year were anything special, we do have a lot to look forward to.
Lady Gaga is still on the rise as one of the biggest pop stars the world has ever seen.
Eminem is making a comeback onto the music scene, and though I admittedly I didn’t really listen to him the first time he was around, I gotta say, I’m diggin’ him.

What year did MTV have the first video music awards
Hello • Sep 20, 2010 at 3:18 pm
Hi! Taylor Swift’s song is actually called, “Innocent”. The line is, “You’re still an innocent,” not “You’re stealing innocence”. Great article!

This article is absolutely amazing! Great job!

Awesome article Ben! The only thing: you said Ms. Swift “sounded very mature” — I have to admit, while the song was as catchy as ever (and thus somewhat formulaic), her voice was weak and flat throughout the performance.
