Gamblers, dancers, romance, and crime: “Guys and Dolls” has got it all.
Staples Players will perform the musical on Nov. 13-15 and 20- 21, so save the date.
“The music is timeless and the characters are unforgettable,” Jamie Yarmoff ’12 said. Yarmoff will be playing Sarah Brown—also played by Tori Schachne ‘11—a beautiful woman working in the Salvation Army.
The play begins with a group of gambling men in town. They depend on Nathan Detroit, played by Max Stampa-Brown ’10, to set up the next gambling location, but there is one catch: he needs $1,000 to get the place.
Along with the gambling problems, there is also, of course, conflict in the romantic aspects of the play. Adelaide, played by Eva Hendricks ’11, has been waiting for 14 years to marry Nathan, even though she doesn’t approve of his gambling.
At the same time, Sky Masterson, double-cast (played by Jake Yarmoff ’10 and Max Samuels ’11), takes a bet to go on a date with Sarah Brown, but finds himself surprisingly falling in love with her.
Other notable characters are Nicely-Nicely Johnson, played by Dan Shure ’10, and Benny Southstreet, played by Chris Nicoletti ’10.
“Guys and Dolls” has been performed at Staples more than once. In fact, Players has produced the show about five times since it was founded in 1959.
It sounds like the fall play will be a success once again. So many people are working hard on stage, and behind the set, to make the play a hit.
It takes a lot of work to pull off such a difficult production in such a short amount of time, but with a 65-person cast and a hardworking tech crew, they will definitely get it done.
“We are lucky we have such intensely motivated, talented, and dedicated people in our organization, or we could not produce the quality performances we do,” said Caley Beretta ’10, President of Staples Players and Assistant Director of the productions.
“Because we practice so much together, the cast gets to know each other really well” said Sami Schwaeber ’12, who plays a Cuban dancer and a school girl.
One thing that sets this version of “Guys and Dolls” apart is that siblings Jamie and Jake Yarmoff both have leading roles.
“I’m really looking forward to working with Jake,” said the younger sibling, Jamie. “We’re really close; he’s so easy to work with. I’m so excited that we get to share something so big together just before he graduates.”
The musical includes some very famous songs that many people will recognize including “Luck Be a Lady,” “Bushel and a Peck,” and “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat.”
“It is truly the perfect musical. A great blend of music, comedy, dance and romance,” director, David Roth said.
‘Guys and Dolls’ is a fun, wacky, larger than life musical featuring some hilarious characters, a fast-paced plot, and a witty score,” Baretta said.
So mark your calendars. You won’t want to miss this one.
